Interim Edge

A neurosymbolic narrative generated using the Narracode harness.

Automode in the Narracode harness. Insert a few unresolved hooks. Use the following passage verbatim as an opener: ‘It’ Ahmani thought, and by ‘it’ he meant global diplomacy, ‘is now a cage fight of thugs with oligarchics rigging a betting pool on the outcome of authorized massacres…’ [seed paragraph, given in full] CONTINUE in same anxious ironic detailed idiomatic cadence, the story of Ahmani, who is working at his first job, post-graduation from the design-math academy, as a category analyst in the interim edge advertising corporation. His lover is a graduate student in anthropology, doing a phd in Fetish Process in Algorithmic Societies of Control. Her name is Lara Cooper. Scathing funny bright innocent. He adores her yet is also fraught with subconscious uncertainties. She is given to extemporaneous rapid phrases without prepositions or context followed by cascading shimmers of laughter or sudden sorrow. Her parents are emotonally distant professionals; his are perpetually concerned almost-retired workers. They both have rich internal lives, the story moves along as a series of vignettes interspersed with extended bursts of interiority: daydreams, thought processes, dreams, reveries, mild hallucinations, often simultaneous woven together. Around them a decaying absurd malevolent ravaged fin de siecle society hurtling thru an oligarchic anthropocene. Imagine it as a story told by David Lynch, Missouri Williams, and Karl Ove Knausgaard. The year is 2031. Raw vivid funny anxious redemptive ambiguity. If necessary read a few of the other recently completed stories and consult the master poetics.

[follow-up] read the finished index.html inside each story folder — and when finished composing, reviewing, and editing to increasingly grow a nuanced character-story-context arc for each, do a final pass to condense every line into a subtle idiom style to generate the final story index.html — using what you’ve learned from the corpus of complete stories. Ask questions if you have to make hard choices.

Fig 0.1 — Swivel chair at six-forty, three tabs closing one after another. On the desk behind the mug, nothing yet worth photographing. Somewhere below, on a landing, silver plastic lifting when the street door goes.

0 — limp balloon

‘It’ Ahmani thought, and by ‘it’ he meant global diplomacy, ‘is now a cage fight of thugs with oligarchics rigging a betting pool on the outcome of authorized massacres. And media-manipulated masses infected by patriotic fever fed carcinogenic ultra-processed snacks and narcotics on all sides.’

He sighed, adjusting his scrawny frame in his swivel chair and closed the news tabs. Depressed, the image of a limp balloon, post-party, crept into mind: the palpable edges, the folds of plastic, the sedated bobbing.

‘Growth math, open loop, retention meme propaganda.’ The smudged mutter of mundane strategies besieged him.

A fragment of last night’s dream arose in his mouth like saliva: he was sent on race through a building, had the lead, then stopped to tie his shoe, lost the others, didn’t know the path, stood among curved wall, cried out ‘i’m giving up. I don’t know the way.’ screamed in anguish: ‘wtf.’ then saw to his right a group of toddlers in a daycare all swivel to look at him as he swore. A dozen Innocent little faces trembling, shocked by inexplicable adult anger; several on verge of, swollen with tears, uncertain, wobbly looking to their center, where seated among them, a white haired serene woman, non-reactive, also looking at him. Neutral, gentle, no judgement, no disrespect, just awareness. He swivelled away in shame, and suddenly saw his lover looking at clothes on a used discount rack. She had seen it too. In his mind now, awake among the contours of objects awakening to discernibility at dawn, he went and sat down among the children and they soothed his hair. From this tender unexpected acceptance, the knowledge grew, he had won the race that was not a race, there was no race, no course, just imagined paths.

Platitudes, he muttered. Smudging away the vulnerability and the dream smeared, beneath his hand wiping his eyes.

Fig 1.2 — Fourth-floor landing, morning. Mylar, silver, HAPP legible, remainder crushed under a fold. Tethered to nothing. The paler dust around it has the shape of a longer stay than anyone has admitted to.

1 — lapsed enthusiast

Counter where hips meet. Listening to the water transition from silence to hiss to rolling boil froth (panic? no, calm.) before the click. Filter cone unrinsed since last night, grounds set to a black cake, thumb on wet paper, revulsion. Coffee. Chicory. Broccoli. Crumpled waxed-paper bag saying "Get Yours Here".

Lara asleep in the bed on the floor just beyond the counter. One foot out, a wedge of pale. His own hands: chocolate. Sleep freight heat wrapped her tight. Mouth open, a sheen at the corner of it. Haphazard, open. Heart skewed sideways, love, a medical condition. Pain. Perhaps she would leave him in about fourteen months. His breath caught. Sad. Itemized. Sighing.

Emptied the drains into the compost. Rinsed the holder. Put in a fresh filter. Being as quiet as possible. Yet trusting in her impeccable capacity to sleep. Poured the water. Heard it enter the filter, soothing and extracting the bitter energy of attachment anxiety. Dripping into the cup.

cohabiting · pre-attrition · sentiment stable, trending

Six flights down. Hand on the rail, loose at the third turn and loose since March, same as the lift, whose notice had gone yellow, corners curling.

Fourth-floor landing. The balloon. Mylar. Silver. HAPP legible, the rest crushed under a fold. Tethered to nothing. Street door went below and it lifted, settled. Sedated. Bobbing. There when they moved in. Nobody on four claimed it. He had stopped asking.

Outside, heat with a rating. Amber, act normally. Sweat at the hairline before the corner.

Ad surfaces the east wall of the tram stop. One doing the trick where the eye follows exactly as long as your gait matches crowd average. Walked wrong. Broke it. Four steps of that.

Vending wall. FYRE SNAX (Cat. 2). CRUNCHTIDE (Cat. 2). A gel called LOYAL, sachet the colour of a wound. Hazard class at legally mandated size, fingernail, on a background chosen by somebody in a building like his to land at unreadable. Decal beneath: "EAT SOMETHING, YOU'VE EARNED IT". Two men sharing a vape. Pear. Solvent. Behind the pear, something that made the back of the throat go quiet.

Tram rerouted. The long way. Around the hours. Nobody said curfew. Published Sundays, never the same twice, so no habit could form against them. Arithmetic, he assumed. Not malice. (Or. He had stopped telling those apart at any distance.)

Interim Edge had nine through fourteen. Insurance until the flood-model repricing. Lobby kept the marble. Veined. Cold. Palm flat on it going past, for the cold. Security desk, three people at it, for a door that scanned you anyway.

Onboarding, month one, a senior with beautiful hands: category is a kindness. Without category we would have to look at everyone. Half the room laughed. Ahmani wrote it down.

Category Integrity ran forty-one thousand two hundred and six segments. Merge. Split. Sunset. Sunset the verb. Miko Sarr ate breakfast at his desk from a bowl he never carried to the kitchen, kept a tally of sunsets on a sticky note, four and a diagonal. You'll stop noticing by the second quarter, Miko said. Kindly. Cost him nothing. Not worth less for it.

Academy: propensity surfaces, then affinity topology, distinction in both. Could feel a segment's shape before opening it. The useful part of him. Paid for since June. Rent. His mother's phone bill. A lemon. Fast, and being fast sat in the body exactly where grace sits, and he kept that where he kept the other one.

Ten past nine. Adjacency queue. Four minutes an item, measured. Later. It could sit.

RS-09 instead.

Back. Sunset in May, in November, in June, and here nine days after the last one. Re-formed. 1.4 million, climbing. Definition field empty. Not blank. Empty, in a schema that does not permit empty. Behaviour signature all it had: initiate · interrupt · return. Start a task. Stop partway. Come back later. Or not later. Or in a way the model had decided to call later.

Wrote to Delph. Eleven minutes.

not ours

Read it four times looking for the second sentence. Hands flat on the desk. Ninth floor under his shoes.

Corridor again. Curved wall. Certainty of the lead. Stopped to tie my shoe. Everybody went past. Didn't see which way. Wall curves. Can't see far enough ahead to know whether it goes anywhere.

Looked down. Left lace untied. Two grey worms on the carpet tile.

Tied it. Opened the queue.

Fig 2.3 — The table by seven. Printouts fanned, three colours of pen, a laptop propped on a hardback about kinship serving as furniture. On the sill behind, a lemon, knuckled at one end.

2 — high-intent, low-trust

Six flights up, shirt to the spine, last flight slower than the first four.

Seven. She had the table. Always the table by seven.

'Lemon,' she said, not looking up. 'Six. Six euro. Shape of a fist.'

On the sill. Knuckled at one end. Yellow going orange where the light came through.

'Bought it anyway. Obviously bought it. Look at it.' Then the laugh. Back of the throat, up in steps, breaking near the top into four or five pieces, each smaller, the last breath only. Heel of the hand to the eye. 'Six.' Back to the pen.

Cooked. Rice measured in a jar that was not a cup and had never been. Rinsed twice, water cloudy then less. Water to the first knuckle. Tin of beans, label half off, thumbed. Frozen spinach, a green brick, hissing. Extractor fan on its one note. Small of the back against the counter edge, which is where he stood, which is why the paint there had gone.

Block opposite doing its evening. Four hundred lit rectangles. Third floor, a man watering a plant with enormous care. Bins eleven days, contract to arbitration, arbitration to a body that meets quarterly.

'Vanni says chapter three is interesting.' Quotes with the pen. 'Interesting means resubmit. Interesting means abstract, on a train, thumb.'

'It's not interesting?'

'It's good.' Arms up. 'It's so good, Ahmani. Disgustingly good, I read it Tuesday and was jealous of it.' Cascade. Gone. 'He wants an intervention in the literature. I don't want an intervention in the literature. I want to describe what people actually do with a coupon.'

Talking while he stirred. Theory out of her in pieces with the joints removed. He had learned to take the pieces and not ask for joints.

'Fetish isn't the object. Everyone goes straight to object. Fetish is the ledger. Where the labour went to hide. Coat doesn't do anything, coat is a place. There's a woman in Dhaka in the coat and we've all agreed to be polite about it.'

Ten minutes later, about something else. 'Corridor. Deleuze, corridor, modulation, fine, fine. Nobody says what a corridor smells like. Wet coats. Always wet coats.'

He told her about RS-09. Had carried it since ten past nine.

Pen down. That was how he knew.

'Empty field.'

'Schema won't take empty. Takes null. Null's a value. This is nothing.'

'Sunset three times.' Up, at the counter, lemon in her hand without her having noticed picking it up. 'Ahmani. Something's putting it back.'

'Delph says not ours.'

'Delph says.' A sound with no vowels. Then, to the window, quiet: 'that's a door.' Segment, or his job, or the sentence. He asked. 'Yes,' she said, and laughed, and it went up the steps and broke.

She read. He cleared. Plate, plate, pot, the pot last because of the rice. From the sink, watching: her hand going out flat over a page. Palm down. Unhurried. Covering a hand of cards nobody was accusing.

'Which one?'

'Four.'

'Why?'

'Not yet.' Whole face open. Entirely warm. Telling him nothing.

Dried the pot. Wanted, and was ashamed of wanting, to ask whether he was in chapter four. Whether he was material. Whether he had been entered somewhere with a date on it — informant · cohabiting · category-adjacent · unusually candid after eleven p.m. Could see the entry. Could see the neatness of the handwriting doing it.

Sofa, later. The room labelling itself. Mild. Headache-mild. Lemon: aspirational produce · single-unit · affect purchase, no repeat. Used coat over the chair back: thrift-identified · income-suppressed · high cultural capital. His own hands on the cushion, manual, non-manual, category error, and the error was funny, and he laughed out loud once, and she said what, and he said nothing.

Then, under a second, Lara resolved into a card. Face. Three bullets. A lift number in the corner.

Never told her. Not drunk. Not ever. Not dying.

'Corinne wrote,' at half eleven, from the table.

'Your mother.'

'Corinne wrote.' Read out flat. Three lines. Congratulations on a conference she had not attended. The weather where they had moved to. Eat properly. Signed with her name. Not mum. Corinne.

Then her face went. No transition. Weather does not transition on a screen, it is the next frame. Mouth first. Then all of it. Hands in her lap while it went through her, thirty seconds, forty. He crossed the room, hand flat between her shoulder blades, because speaking during it made it longer.

Passed. Blew out hard. Looked up, glassy, amused.

'Eat properly,' she said. 'Corinne.' And the laugh came back up through the wreckage of the other. Bravest person he had met. Same track, no gap: a stranger.

In the night she said it again. Said it most nights, from far under, unhurried, addressed to somebody.

'…not the way we said. Tell them not the way we said.'

Eyes open in the dark. Radiator ticking despite the heat. Building doing its arithmetic. Four floors down, under the crushed fold of the word, the balloon lifting and settling as the street door went.

Fig 3.4 — Two of them at once in the frame, shoulder to shoulder, leaning in. Behind: an ironing board still up, a wall calendar, a shirt on a hanger hooked over a door.

3 — caregiver, adjacent

Sunday, half four. By half four the ironing was done and his father was back from the depot. Before half four they were unreachable. A whole life organised around not being a burden.

Screen propped against the fruit bowl, angled with a folded envelope until it stayed. Two of them at once, always, shoulder to shoulder, leaning in.

'You're thin,' said Ferouz.

'I'm the same.'

'Thinner than the same.'

Sabir off to the side, at the arithmetic of the world. 'Know what they wanted for a melon? Guess. Guess what they wanted.'

'Dad—'

'Guess.'

Guessed low on purpose, for the pleasure of it. Got the whistle. Got the head shake. Machinery he grew up inside. Every gear audible.

They asked about Lara. A formality used for nobody else — and how is Lara — both at once, practically, because Lara had once, over a call, inside thirty seconds, told Sabir his shirt was a good shirt and asked what it cost, and Sabir had told her, and something was established that afternoon neither of them had needed to name since.

Then the job. Here was the part.

'Still the categories.'

'He does the categories,' Sabir told Ferouz, who had been in the room throughout. 'At the depot I said: my son. Advertising. Big firm. Marble in the lobby.'

'It's insurance marble.'

'Marble is marble.'

Under the ribs, the turn. The sentence was ready. Carried since June. Dad, Thursdays I decide which brands may run against footage of authorized actions. There's a dropdown. Third option is Permit with cushion. Cushion means four seconds of something soothing in front. Ninety a week. I'm quick at it. Rehearsed in the shower with the water running, so it could be said aloud without being said.

'Marble is marble,' he agreed.

head of household · aspirational-proxy · pride, high · disclosure risk, nil

'The package,' Ferouz said.

'What package?'

'Ahmani.' Patient. Terrifying. 'The package. Three weeks. The dates, the good ones, the jar from your aunt. And the paper for you to sign.'

'What paper?'

'The paper for your father's top-up. Has your name on it. I don't know why it has your name, they put your name, so you sign it and send it back and then they stop writing to us.' Already reading from her phone, arm out straight, holding the phone at fault. 'Delivered. It says delivered. Tuesday the twelfth. Eleven forty. Delivered.'

'Nothing came.'

'It says delivered.'

'Mum. Nothing came.'

'Then somebody has it,' said Ferouz, and put the phone face down, which is what she did when a subject was concluded rather than resolved.

Went down after. Bins eleven days, so the stairwell had weather now, a warm sourness arriving at the third floor and thickening.

Fourth-floor landing. The balloon had more air in it.

Stood over it. Silver. HAPP. Where the fold had been, a curve. Crouched. Knees cracking. Two fingers on it. Cool. Taut at the knuckled end. Giving under the press and coming back. Seam near the neck puckered. Strain.

Behind him, on four, a door off its latch, stopping at the chain. No face. Dark of a hallway. A television doing applause.

'Sorry,' Ahmani said, to nobody, standing, hands slightly up. Guilty of what.

Chain back on. Door closed.

Courtyard. Light gone amber and then some, heat off the paving into the backs of the knees. Children out, four or five, a length of cable and a bucket, something complicated. He stopped. In the dream they had all swivelled, every one, a dozen faces at once, at adult anger.

These did not turn. Did not look up at all. One said no, you have to say it first, and another said I did say it, and the first said say it properly, and it went on in the exact grammar of an argument he had had at eight in a courtyard four hundred kilometres from this one. He stood in the smell of the bins with the phone warm in his hand, wanting so badly to be looked at by somebody who was not scoring him that his eyes went hot. Hand over them. Pressed.

Somebody has it.

Then: it says delivered.

Back up. Six flights, past the balloon, which lifted a little as he went by, and settled.

Fig 4.5 — A row on a screen: duration, provenance chain, four-digit sector, audio present, distress index to two places, face count. Beside it a dropdown, open, three values. Above the fold, a tile, green.

4 — patriot, dormant

Thursday was adjacency.

An item arrived as a row. Duration. Provenance chain. Sector, unnamed, four digits. Audio: present. Distress index, two decimal places. Faces: count, and whether any were under the minimum. Then a dropdown, three values. Permit. Permit with cushion. Withhold. Cushion meant four seconds of neutral content in front. Waves, usually. A field. A hand smoothing a bedsheet, because the research said a hand smoothing a bedsheet returned the pulse to baseline faster than water did.

Four minutes an item, measured. Ninety seconds, average. Average on a tile. Tile green.

Nobody watched the footage. Watching was another team, another city, another contract, paid more, written up in a magazine everyone at Interim Edge had read and nobody had mentioned.

Opened. Read the row. Clicked. Next.

Opened. 0.71. Faces four, under-minimum two. Withhold — not conscience. Hard-coded. The one place in the whole product where a machine had been given a spine.

Opened. 0.38. Audio present. Hand on the mouse, cool plastic, the small dead weight of it. Forty-one seconds. Permit.

Somewhere in the building, allegedly, a room where these got audited. He had seen its name on a form. Never met anyone who had been in it. The not-meeting had stopped being strange around week three, the way a smell stops.

Left of the dashboard, a tile. Your clearances, YTD. Collapsed. Never expanded. Over four thousand somewhere in there. Cursor went twice that morning and came away twice. Jaw locked the second time. Unlocked it. Coffee cold. Broccoli.

Eleven. All-hands, floor twelve. Chairs out. Hampers by the door, Cat. 2, a full wall of them, sponsor tie-in, and a raffle.

VP of Growth. Thirty-four. Good linen. A way of pausing before nouns.

'We've been shipping … completion,' he said. 'A decade of completion. Beautiful thing to ship. And it's over.'

Slide. One word.

CONTINUITY™

'An unclosed loop,' said the VP, 'is a debt the mind insists on paying.'

Ahmani wrote it down. Wrote everything down. Beside him Miko ate from the bowl. Curves went up. Nothing in the experience would ever finish. No ending. No receipt. No last episode. No confirmation screen. Every surface leaving one filament out. Day-ninety retention sixty-one against a benchmark of nineteen, and the mechanism was housekeeping, not desire.

His mother's phone, face down on the table. Concluded rather than resolved. Wrote that in the margin. Did not know whose side he had written it on.

Then a woman three rows up said, clearly, not loudly, 'what about the sector inventory,' and four hundred heads swivelled.

All of them. At once. That soft mass rotation of a floor turning. Chairs. Necks. His own neck going with it before anything was decided, and he sat there rotated with everybody, looking at a woman in a green cardigan whose face was doing what a face does on discovering how many people are in a room.

'Sorry, no, it's fine, sorry.'

Heads went back.

'Let's take that offline,' the VP said, warmly, and the linen moved on, and the room breathed out, and somebody won the hamper. Miko. Who said oh no, delighted, and carried it back on his hip.

Persona library at two.

Every segment card wants a face. Licensed, cleared, model-released, sortable by warmth, by trust index, by whether the eyes read as listening. He needed one for a merged cohort — caregivers, adjacent, urban, heat-adapted. Scrolled. Thirty a second. Faces going by faster than faces go by.

Stopped.

Row four. White hair. Serene. Non-reactive. Mouth doing almost nothing. Eyes into the lens with no request in them.

Neutral. Gentle. No judgement, no disrespect. Just awareness.

Cursor on her. Panel open. Asset acquired 2019. Source library defunct. Usage count 0. Status: RESTRICTED. Clicked through for the model release. Spinner. Then a page saying the record was held by an entity whose name was seven letters and a numeral, and a link, and the link went to the login of a system he had no credentials for and had never heard of.

Sat back. Ninth-floor hum in the soles of his shoes.

Went to close the window. Closed the wrong one. Underneath, the shared calendar. Thursdays, recurring, 15:00. P. Ganz — cat-integrity walkthrough. Accepted. Green. A series with no end date. Peter Ganz off the org chart since March. Nobody had removed the invite. Every Thursday it came round and at three it was declined by nobody and attended by nobody and went on being scheduled.

Looked at it a while. Then opened the queue and did eleven more before the hour turned.

Fig 5.6 — Top deck, front left, the seat with the melted patch. Bag on knees. Out the window a hoarding: a man in a good coat looking at a horizon added later, badly, light on his face coming from nowhere in the frame.

5 — thursday cohort

Thursday she left at four, and the leaving was the good part of the week, and she would not have said so aloud to anybody. Him especially.

Six flights two at a time, thigh burn by four, past the balloon, hand out to touch it because she always touched it — hello you — and into the heat. Which is a wall you walk into and are then simply inside. No transition. Welcome.

Bus. Upper deck, front left, seat with the melted patch, thumb finding the melted patch. Bag on knees. Knees against the rail.

Vanni had said interesting and Vanni could get in the sea. Vanni's whole apparatus was thirty years old, beautifully maintained, and could not carry a bag of shopping. What she wanted to write about was the woman at the market stall with a plastic sleeve of loyalty cards. Forty of them. Shops that no longer exist. Kept. Who said, when Lara asked, well, they might honour them — and that had gone into her like a splinter in March and was still working its way out. They might honour them. Value does not leave the card when the shop shuts. It goes somewhere. It waits. Somebody is still owed and nobody is still owing and the card keeps the account open.

Whole thesis. Four hundred pages of it. Vanni wants an intervention in the literature.

Chapter four: a tooth. Not now. Not with the tongue. Later.

She was aware — extremely aware, thank you — that she could not write chapter four in the flat. Not noise. He made almost no noise. Came home and folded into the corner of the sofa, chair being put away, and asked about her day with such careful attention that answering was being interviewed by somebody who loved her. Twenty minutes of it and she wanted to lie down on the tiles and be a tile.

He did not know that. She would sooner have swallowed the lemon whole.

if he knew he'd decide it meant something and then he'd be right and then what

Out the window: flyover, bad river, hoardings. Three girls on the pavement in the co-ordinated crop of the season doing the walk that walk-detection cannot follow, and Lara laughed out loud on an empty top deck. Ha. Absolutely. Go on.

Then, no warning, chlorine.

Not where she was going. Memory. Eleven years old, Tuesdays, swimming. Corrugated ceiling panels, light off the water onto them in nets. Last one on the bench, wet costume under a tracksuit, hair freezing to a helmet, the cold of the bench through it. Woman at the desk saying is somebody coming for you love and Lara saying yes in a voice of enormous social competence, at eleven, because at eleven the correct answer is already the one that ends the conversation. Corinne at ten past six. Ellis at twenty past, separately, each having believed the other. Neither cross. Both so sorry, darling, same words, two cars.

Sat with it a stop and a half. Then it went. Looked at her own hands. Forty loyalty cards.

Her stop.

A street she liked. A door she liked. Buzzer with tape over the label, tape gone soft. Stairwell with the smell — bleach, hot dust, and under it the pool-smell that is not from a pool. Room at the top where the counter is. Basil said 'Cooper' without looking up and slid it across. 'Basil,' she said, warmly. An entire relationship in surnames and one syllable.

No notebook. First thing she gave up, month two. It had cost her something she has no word for. She did it anyway. Happier here than anywhere and will think about what that means when she is finished. Or not.

Home at ten past eleven.

Ahmani awake with the lamp on, pretending to read, which he does by holding a book and looking at a point four centimetres past it.

'Hi,' he said.

'Hi.' Bag by the door, unopened. Face into his neck. Stayed. Hand on the back of her head. Nobody said anything a while. Fan turning. Four floors down, something lifting and settling.

'You smell like a swimming pool.'

'I know.' Voice up on the second word into the start of the laugh, and it came up the steps and broke, last piece breath only. 'Six euro,' into his collarbone, apropos of nothing, and he had no idea, and she felt him decide not to ask, and loved him for it, and was briefly sorry for him.

Later. Lights off. Both flat on their backs in the heat. Ankle against ankle, the only contact either could stand.

'Ahmani.'

'Mm.'

'If I said a thing.' Pause. Fan. 'If I said a thing and it was — no.' Turned over. 'No. It's fine.'

'Lara.'

'It's fine!' Cheerful. Entirely. Unfakeable. 'Go to sleep, you're doing your worry face, I can hear it.'

He lay there and did his worry face.

She was asleep in ninety seconds and said nothing at all that night, and the silence was worse than the sentence would have been.

Fig 6.7 — Corner where wall meets step. Dust in the shape of something, a paler grey, and a curl of ribbon that was underneath the whole time. Above, on four, a door standing open about a hand's width. No light behind it.

6 — unlabeled

Rain came once in the third week of September. Forty minutes. Street steamed after and everybody stood in doorways smelling it, and then it went back to being what it had been.

The balloon left the landing that week.

Tuesday, going down. Corner where wall meets step: dust in the shape of it, paler grey, and a curl of ribbon never seen before because the ribbon had been underneath. On four the door stood open. Not on the chain. Open, a hand's width. Dark. No television. No applause. Bag on his shoulder, standing there longer than a person stands.

'Hello?'

Nothing. Pulled it to, gently, latch untouched. Not closed. Not open.

Letterboxes downstairs. A slip. Attempted 08:40. Signed for by resident. Addressed to A. MANI, flat 6.

Read the name four times. Slip into the coat pocket. Did not tell his mother.

At the office the crèche is behind glass on the ground floor, off the lobby, past the marble. Two hundred times past it. That morning he stopped.

Nine or ten of them in there. Low table. A tub of something. One kid at the glass, hand flat on it. Hand came off. Five fingers of fog. Looking at him with the total unembarrassed attention of somebody who has not learned that looking costs.

He raised a hand. Chest height. A man swearing an oath badly.

Kid waved with the whole arm.

under-minimum · non-

It stopped there. Would not finish. Nothing after the hyphen.

Practitioner looked up from the table. Forty, maybe. Dark hair pinned. Not her. Nothing like her. Disappointment arriving in the body before the hope had been permitted. Standing with the bag on his shoulder and the lanyard turned the wrong way out, holding a wave to a child through a window, in the lobby of a building where he cleared ninety items a week.

She smiled at him. Politely.

He went up.

CONTINUITY shipped in October. Day-ninety retention held. Cake on twelve.

Thursday at three the invite came round again — P. Ganz — cat-integrity walkthrough — and the cursor went onto Decline and stayed there until the mouse went to sleep.

The query was written already. Written since August. Filter the segment against a single device identifier. His own. Pasted it. Looked at it. Selected the whole line. Deleted it.

Clicked into the definition field instead, which had never held anything, and typed:

Save. It took it. Green tick. Timestamp. His initials in the audit column.

Heart going. Miko said something about the cake.

Next morning the field was empty.

Not reverted with a note. Not flagged. Not queried. Empty, as it had been, in a schema that does not permit empty, and no line in the audit, and his initials gone from the column. No hand had been on the glass.

Did not tell Delph. Wrote it in the notebook, the useful part of him.

Home. Lara at the table by seven. Printouts fanned. Three colours of pen. Thursday's bag by the door, unopened, four days, and he had not asked and was not going to.

'Chapter four,' she said, without preamble, to the page.

'Mm.'

'Nearly.' Looked up. Whole face. 'Nearly, Ahmani.'

He said that was great and meant it, and under the meaning it, the floor of the fourteen months, which had moved again, and which he had never once checked against anything.

Told her about the definition field. Told it badly, out of order, the tick first and the empty after, and she stopped him twice to make him do it properly, and at the morning she put both hands flat on the table.

'It read it.'

'It didn't read it. It's a field.'

'Ahmani.' Up. 'Something reads the fields.'

'Or a job runs at four and wipes non-conforming entries.'

'Sure,' she said, in the voice of a person granting a point in order to keep the other one, and stood at the window with her arms folded, and said it again, quiet, to the glass — 'that's a door' — and laughed once. No cascade. One note. Came back to the table.

The dream had been the building again. Curved wall. He had the lead. He stopped.

Closed the tabs.

Behind him Lara asleep. One foot out, a wedge of pale. His own hands on the arms of the chair. Heart doing its medical thing.

There's no race, he said. Out loud. In the room. Six-forty in the morning, to nobody, in the voice of a man reading a slogan off a wall.

It sounded like exactly what it was.

Said it again anyway.

Then up. Emptied the drains. Rinsed the holder. Fresh filter. Quiet as possible. Poured. Listened to it go from silence to hiss to rolling boil froth before the click, and four floors down there was only the paler grey where something had lain, and in the coat pocket the slip with the name that was almost his.
